Universal’s product integrity systems are supported by product traceability initiatives, as traceability is a key component of any product integrity program. Traceability is important for two reasons. First, it assists our ability to expediently implement corrective actions for product integrity issues. Once an issue is identified, it is critical to trace the problem to its source and deploy appropriate resources to eliminate the problem. Second, traceability assists in the isolation and removal of non-conforming products from the supply chain. Product traceability serves to protect the supply chain from issues such as seed integrity, agrochemicals, and farm and factory sanitation and NTRM.

While origin traceability can be influenced by the type of marketing system, we strive to establish comprehensive programs to the fullest extent possible. Our traceability efforts are greatly aided by the various green leaf and production control systems already in place. The tasks of inspection, purchasing, receiving and blending require inventory lists and reports, which are directly used in the traceability process. In these and other processes, our facilities concentrate on the utilization of technology to maintain and improve traceability.

Traceability extends into the processing facility, where blending decisions can be made based on existing green inventory information. While the nature of the process and a number of variables affect traceability efforts, Universal continues work to maximize our knowledge and understanding regarding the relationship between input and output products in each of our facilities. Keeping these process variables in mind, we have worked to narrow the traceability range by gauging process timings and tracking the multiple input grades going into the process. These actions assist in ultimately improving product traceability.
